“While it is true that most people never see or understand the difference they make, or sometimes only imagine their actions having a tiny effect, every single action a person takes has far-reaching consequences.” ~Andy Andrews, The Noticer: Sometimes, All a Person Needs Is a Little Perspective.

Friday 13th Quotes

Look out! It is Friday the 13th!  For fun, I have gathered a little information concerning this superstition and a few spooky quotations. JB

According to Wikipedia: "The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, "originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion" in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday.(1)

The fear of the number 13 has been given a scientific name: "triskaidekaphobia"; and on analogy to this the fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia, from the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning "Friday"), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning "thirteen").(2)

History records that Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, had a mild case of triskaidekaphobia [and] disliked the number thirteen. Journalist and Roosevelt biographer John Gunther wrote, “Like most people with good luck, FDR was moderately—not excessively—superstitious. He hated Friday the thirteenth, he would never start an important trip on a Friday if he could help it, and he disliked sitting down with thirteen at dinner.” (3)

“Holiness does not consist in doing extraordinary things. It consists in accepting, with a smile, what Jesus sends us. It consists in accepting and following the will of God.” ~Mother Teresa

Ten Great Quotes on Leadership

I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers. —Ralph Nader

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. —John Maxwell

I learned that a great leader is a man who has the ability to get other people to do what they don't want to do and like it. -Harry S Truman

Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way. — General George Patton

Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. —Jack Welch

I always remember an epitaph which is in the cemetery at Tombstone, Arizona. It says: 'Here lies Jack Williams. He done his damnedest.' I think that is the greatest epitaph a man can have - When he gives everything that is in him to do the job he has before him. That is all you can ask of him and that is what I have tried to do. -Harry S Truman

The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. —Theodore Roosevelt

The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes. It is very easy to say yes. —Tony Blair

The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly. —Jim Rohn

Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems. —Brian Tracy

"Be Yourself" * Today's Quote

Athenticity

"Be yourself - not your idea of what you think somebody else's idea of yourself should be."--Henry David Thoreau

"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." -William Shakespeare

“What it means to be authentic:

  • - to be more concerned with truth than opinions
  • - to be sincere and not pretend
  • - to be free from hypocrisy: "walk your talk"
  • - to know who you are and to be that person
  • - to not fear others seeing your vulnerabilities
  • - being confident to walk away from situations where you can't be yourself
  • - being awake to your own feelings
  • - being free from others' opinions of you
  • - accepting and loving yourself”

Today's Quote will Unlock the Door to Success

How far you go in life depends on

"How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these." ~ George Washington

Today's Quotation for Resurrection Sunday

He is not here. He is risen!
"I have been used for many years to study the histories of other times, and to examine and weigh the evidence of those who have written about them, and I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller evidence of every sort, to the understanding of a fair inquirer, than the great sign which God hath given us that Christ died and rose again from the dead." -Thomas Arnold

Nearness is not a matter of geography

When it seems as if God is far away, remind yourself that He is near.
When it seems as if God is far away, remind yourself that He is near.

“When it seems as if God is far away, remind yourself that He is near. Nearness is not a matter of geography. God is everywhere. Nearness is likeness. The more we become like the Lord, the nearer He is to us.” -Warren W. Wiersbe

We recommend For His Glory: A Kaleidoscope of Wisdom because “A good book is like a seed: it produces fruit that has in it seed for more fruit. It is not a picture on the wall; it is a window that invites us to wider horizons.” ~Warren W. Wiersbe

Pray and Obey

Praying which does not result in pure conduct is a delusion.

Praying which does not result in pure conduct is a delusion. We have missed the whole office and virtue of praying if it does not rectify conduct. It is in the very nature of things that we must quit praying, or quit bad conduct. - E. M. Bounds

Today's Quotation: Knowledge

proverbs 1_5
"What we know is a drop, what we don't know is an ocean." ~Isaac Newton

"It is harder to conceal ignorance than to acquire knowledge." ~Various Authors

"Zeal without knowledge is like a mettled horse without eyes, or like a sword in a madman's hand; and there is no knowledge where there is not the word: for if they reject the word of the Lord, and act not by that, 'What wisdom is in them?' saith the prophet (Jer 8:9; Isa 8:20)." ~John Bunyan

"Faith consists, not in ignorance, but in knowledge, and that, not only of God, but also of the divine will." ~John Calvin

Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Psalm 119:66

Why is discipline important?

“Why is discipline important? Discipline teaches us to operate by principle rather than desire. Saying no to our impulses (even the ones that are not inherently sinful) puts us in control of our appetites rather than vice versa. It deposes our lust and permits truth, virtue, and integrity to rule our minds instead.” ― John MacArthur

Today's Quotation: "The Bible is not..."

"The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts." -A. W. Tozer , The Pursuit of God
